40k: Painting A Nurgle Forgefiend

Buoyed by the progress made on the Nurgle Heldrake during the week, I dedicated a few hours this weekend to bring my Nurgle Forgefiend in line with the flying beastie.

With a large part of Friday evening and Saturday spent painting, he is now starting to look a lot more the part. I'm currently up to the point of doing the final highlights – I've done most of the front armour but the back half is not complete yet – bringing it in line with the Heldrake. I've been doing a tag-team paint with these two models, progress on one informing the treatment of the other. It also breaks up some of the monotony of painting the same models for several days.

One of the big decisions to be made here was what colour to do the fleshy parts of the Forgefiend. In the end I went with a purple colour to contrast with all the green and brown. It was toned down with Brown and Green washes and by using green in the highlight process. The desaturated result looks very much the part now.

I can now go back to the mouth of the Forgefiend with my purple recipe and try and get it to match. The only thing left to do after that is the two gun arms, so I'm hoping to have him finished for the weekend.

  1. Great work. Really enjoy the look you've got going on the Nurgle stuff. Very different and a refreshing change from the traditional studio stuff.

Are you planning on adding in a spot colour or some brighter areas (glowing vents etc?)

    1. I am – I bought some Vallejo flo green but I'm wondering is I need to go with a traditional blue plasma look. Quite nervous about it because it will jar against the rest of the model (but that's kind of the point). Watch this space ;)

    1. I read about James Wappel using fluorescent yellow and orange to paint candle flame so I thought I'd give some glowing green a go. We will see how it turns out.

  3. I really like the direction you took for the skin parts.. they do look the part indeed! Great stuff there! Good luck with them and the flo-green paint. I have some, and it is quite bright!

    1. The flo green will either look superb, too borg-like or just too bright. However, you just have to go for it I think and patch up later if it's not right.

Be glad to finish this and the flyer and move on to something new!

  4. Hey, I just stumbled across your blog. It's a shame I haven't paid you a visit before. You have a huge bulk of awesome models. Your Death Guard minis look splendid, when one can say so about Nurgle's scions. ;)

I also struggled with the choice of colour for the fleshy parts on my Fiends, Heldrakes and Daemon Prince. It's quite an annoying matter as it determines the whole model. But your choice was a good one.
