Charity Malifaux Crew Complete…

As post number 100 for this year it is only fitting that it be a cracker!

++ Go to ebay and see the auction here ++

As you know, just about a month ago A Tale of 3 Painters charity project was started. We managed to finish painting our models in around three weeks and here they are, finally united once again.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow painters, who donated their time, effort and paint to complete this project. I think you will agree that, despite three different people painting two models each in isolation and in their own unique style, the finished miniatures looks remarkably cohesive and are a crew that anyone would be proud to own and game with.

C. Hoffman

C. Hoffman himself is nothing short of wondrous. It's only when you see him in person and realise how small the model is that you can truly understand what a superb job Andy did to maintain the level of detail he has. The fragile nature of the harness made for a tricky job, but the finished model really is the focal point of the crew.

The Mechanical Attendant

The Mechanical Attendant, with his bright yellow armour, is a great contrast as Hoffman's totem. The idea of him being a twisted version of C3-PO with a gun has come to life. Despite being a similar size to Hoffman, the model didn't have nearly as much detail and allowed me the opportunity to use an extended range of paints, washes and inks to achieve a yellow that was bright but not garish, in keeping with the world of Malifaux.

Ryle

Ryle (Hoffman's mutated brother) is a great mix of meat and machine. He is also quite a large model, full of details, giving Michael quite a task. Tackling it head on he even added stripes to Ryle's trousers, which is so accurate it's not obvious at first that it is completely freehand. The final result is a character that looks truly tormented and is so wonderfully painted it makes him a must-have in your crew list. The foliage detail on the base adds another dimension to the character, as he stalks his prey through the streets.

The Watcher

The Watcher, flying high above the city, is a bit of an odd one out. The very nature of the character meant he needed to be on a different base from the rest of the crew. With this in mind, elements of plastic ruins were used to build up the base and add height to the model – implying it's battlefield drone-like nature – and the base weighted. Andy has managed to create great contrast between the metallic body of the machine and the leathery texture of its wings.

The Guardian

The Guardian is possibly the tallest model of the crew (excluding The Watcher). He is Hoffman's bodyguard and in my mind represents The Guild completely. With this in mind I went with strong red armour. The fact that he is likely to take more punishment on the battlefield than anyone else is highlighted by the scratches and scrapes on his body and shield. His blue glowing eyes and power cell, which contrasts so much with the red armour, hints at the power and strength within.

The Hunter

The Hunter is another unique model, who is more at home stalking the enemy from the shadows rather than combining with the rest of the crew en mass. Michael has managed to hit the nail on the head with his more metallic approach. He has created a striped effect along the machines body with alternate use of brass and bronze, which also reflects colours in Hoffman's harness. He definitely looks the most aggressive of the machines in the crew. The addition of autumn leaves to the base adds some colour without compromising the tone.

So that's the crew complete!

The crew is travelling to Plymouth this weekend to participate in a game against Joey Berry on Monday. I will be making pitstops in Westham and Swindon to meet up with Michael and Andy, to let them see the final crew in person and to have photos. In addition to Joey's video of the game itself, I hope to add a video diary of the entire trip.

The models will then go up for auction on Wednesday 5th September, together with all the additional goodies donated by our very generous project supporters. I will be going through these additional items in detail before the auction.

Hope you enjoyed our project – if you did please donate. If you want a recap of how we each went about painting our models see the links below.

Now we get to give it all away, which I have to admit is going to be really difficult!!

Revisiting Malifaux…

As the Tale of 3 Painters project draws to a close – my two models are complete, Michael's two arrived on Saturday morning and Andy's are in transit – thoughts turn towards the scheduled game against The JoeyBerry next Monday. Given that I haven't played Malifaux properly in six months I thought I'd make use of the Bank Holiday weekend and arranged a game against Bull.

I had banked on it being like riding a bike – you never forget how it works or what you're meant to be doing, it just takes a little time to get back into the swing of it – errr…no!

I had totally forgotten what I was meant to be doing – even the fundamentals – and we played like two people who were learning the rules for the very first time.

Bull was intending to play Seamus and his Ressers but had left the cards at home. He decided on the Viks, with the addition of Von Schill who neither of us has seen before. I went Guild but for some reason thought that I would take Sonnia as Bull had never played against her before and she always seemed to do well. Unfortunately, Bull's crew had almost no spell casting so most of my crew's funky anti-magic abilities were rendered useless.

Bull took the initiative early on and threw Von Schill down my throat – despite multiple Fire Blasts and gun shots he would not die. In the end he managed to kill a rather hesitant Sonnia with ease. Santiago Ortega and The Judge made their way to the centre of the board to confront the Viks and pick up the Treasure. Alas they both died without getting off a single shot or swing of a sword. It was left to the Witchlings to step up. I managed to take out Sword Vik with a couple of exploding minions and a hand full of wounds off Von Schill, but that was it!

I had not even got to the treasure or close to achieving my schemes, meanwhile Bull's Wagon trundled to the centre of the board unhindered. Bit of a disastrous game for The Guild (the worst I've ever played if I'm honest) – it began with crew selection and went down hill from there.

However, we had a laugh and it helped to refresh my memory with Malifaux basic rules – mission accomplished!

A Tale of 3 Painters… Elementary!

I am very happy to announce that Element Games have joined our list of supporters. A big thank you to Byron who has generously donated to our final auction.

As well as running a fantastic online store Byron has also written a superb collection of painting articles on the Element Games forum. He is a real talent and I have found them very very useful, both from an inspirational perspective as well as an educational one. I strongly recommend anyone who loves reading tutorials to go and have a look!

This completes our list of supporters – a big thank you to all of them – and I will be doing a post shortly going through the items in our final auction that they have all donated.

A Tale of 3 Painters… Week 3 Summary

As the sun begins to set on our painting time for this project it seems that yours truly is the one lagging behind…

Michael's finished models

Michael posted on Monday that he had finished Ryle and The Hunter and, it has to be said that, he has done a fantastic job. I keep harping on about him painting outside of his comfort zone, but this didn't show in the final result. He's managed to produce two superb models that will look great as part of the finished crew.

Hoffman with harness

Andy posted on the same day about his finished Watcher model. He also showcased the progress with Hoffman. With the painting all but complete on the man himself, Andy has switched his attention to the harness, which provides enough of a challenge for any painter. From the WIP shot above it looks like he's got it completely under control.

The Mechanical Attendant

This week has been all about The Mechanical Attendant for me. I flagged up my poor start, trying to paint yellow as my armour colour of choice. But before I could regret my decision making too much I managed to pull it around and now Hoffman's totem is in good shape going into the weekend.

So, with Michael finished and Andy not far behind him, the pressure is on me to get things wrapped up this weekend. With a bit of luck I should get the models finished and all back together in time for some photographs and a blog post or two before the trip to see Joey Berry and the crew's first Malifaux battle!

Alongside the painting progress, we managed to add another supporter to the list. SnM Stuff have been very supportive and will be contributing to the final auction pot. They are a fantastic supplier of gaming extras and essentials – our thanks go out to them.

I will be showcasing the actual items contributed by our supporters in a blog post soon – very excited about that!

Mech Attendant Recovery…

Thought I'd do a quick post showing the Mechanical Attendant in better shape.

I've managed to get some painting done every evening this week so far. This has meant steady progress whilst having enough time away to carefully consider the next step.

As has been discussed in previous comments on this blog, yellow was perhaps not the cleverest choice for painting a charity model under time pressure. It can be very unforgiving – and has proved to be. However, perserverence and the thinning of paint to being almost water has allowed me to get through the problems and not have the model caked in acrylic.

As you can see the yellow armour is not there quite yet. I need to tidy up the final highlights and add a final wash to aid the smooth blending. I was going to do a step by step guide to painting yellow, unfortunately I don't remember how I ended up at this point – so much paint and ink has been applied. I will revisit yellow in the not too distant future and do a more controlled painting session to document it for you all.

The bits currently still black will, for the most part, be finished in my Black/Coal Black mix. The gun will be painted up in red to tie in with the rest of our little crew.

I've got a break for a couple of days now as my evenings are swallowed up by other things. With Bull coming over for a game of Malifaux on Bank Holiday Monday next week it looks like I've got a lot of painting to do this weekend.

A Tale of 3 Painters… Mech Mess

The Mech Attendant – C3-PO with a gun

With the Mechanical Attendant's arms fixed mid-week I got the undercoat layer done on Saturday, ready for a day of painting on Sunday. I was really looking forward to it, but still wasn't sure what colour to paint this model.

The obvious choice was to go with red again, but I felt this would be a red overload on the table when the crew were all together. I could go with the scheme used by Wyrd, or go with Michael's treatment of The Hunter using all metallics. I decided that the Mechanical Attendant was like C3-PO with a gun and a power fist so thought I would head down that route, which would take me close to Wyrd's original scheme. I would add some black and red in there to tie it in with the rest of the crew.

C3-PO… my inspiration

I should have known that I hadn't learned a thing from painting The Guardian and not experiment with colours on a model you intend to sell for charity. Within half an hour I was getting myself into all sorts of trouble. I couldn't get close to the colour scheme I wanted, and as the day progressed things didn't improve much. Remembering my time with The Guardian I took a break for dinner.

You scratch my back…

I went back to the drawing board and started with Bestial Brown, highlighting up with a mix of Golden Yellow and White. At this point the highlights were too much so I went back in with Snakebite Leather and added shadow. I blended this up to the white with a thin layer of Golden Yellow and things were starting to look much better. I took the shadows deeper with a Bestial/Scorched Brown mix, using a brush with just water on it to blur any lines that formed and try and graduate the colour.

Once this was done there were still a large amount of White highlights so I went back in with a watered down wash of Yellow ink. This was supplemented with some Orange ink to deepen the colour in the shadows.

I decided to call it a day so I can sleep on it and look at it fresh next week.

Bumblebee

He's looking more Bumblebee from Transformers than C3-PO (my wife's unbiased observation!) but if I can deepen the shadows and add some fresh white highlights we could be there – having said that I have managed to bleach out most of the shadows in these photos. In reality the colours are much more contrasty with some very dark browns in the shadows. Once the metallics go in I think it will look much better, but I'm pretty pleased so far. I certainly had fun trying to blend colours.

Edit:
I had another 10 minutes this morning (Monday) and (re)discovered Gryphonne Sepia wash – absolutely superb. It provides the perfect link between the dark browns and the yellows and allowed me to smooth out some of the graduations. I added some Devlan Mud to the mix and applied it to the deep recesses and areas in heavy shadow. I will add some more yellow and a final white highlight then his armour is done!

20 Reject Questions…

The Rejects have been coming up with new ways to fill their downtime and Angry Lurker and Ray posted answers to the 20 questions they compiled. Laughing Ferret and Vladdd309 jumped in on the act with their own set of answers.

In order to inject some light relief amongst all the charity-related posts I thought I'd join in.

1. Favourite Wargaming period and why?
I don't play any historical per se so I'll go with genre – got to be sci-fi. From growing up with Star Wars and original Battlestar Galactica, sci-fi is in my blood.

2. Next period, money no object?
I'm happy with my gaming lot right now, however, I'd like to paint some pirates at some point.

3. Favourite 5 films?
In no particular order:
Home Alone
Chris Nolan's Batman Trilogy (yes, I'm counting trilogies as one!)
Warrior
Empire Strikes Back
Lord of the Rings Trilogy

4. Favourite 5 TV series?
Again, in no particular order:
Sopranos
Battlestar Galactica (new version)
Game of Thrones
Deadwood
Entourage

5. Favourite book and author?
That I've actually read?… Frank Herbert's Dune.

6. Greatest General? Can’t count yourself!!
I loved reading about Rommel during my Flames of War days

7. Favourite Wargames rules?
Has to be the Malifaux card-based cheating fate

8. Favourite Sport and team?
Premiership Football – Everton FC – Toffee to the core.

9. If you had a only use once time machine, when and where would you go?
Back to 1989 and tell a younger me that there is no money or glamour to be found in Graphic Design and to become a plumber instead.

10. Last meal on Death Row?
Would have to be a traditional Sunday Roast with Yorkshire Pudding

11. Fantasy relationship and why?
Liv Tyler – she just ticks all the boxes in the gamer part of my brain. The fact she played an elf in LOTR just puts icing on the cake.

12. If your life were a movie, who would play you?
A less-charismatic Chris Evans

13. Favourite Comic Superhero?
I grew up surrounded by Superman after the Chris Reeve film but only ever read Batman comic books.

14. Favourite Military quote?
Despite being mugged by the commercial types, the following Sun Tzu quote has guided my (serious) wargaming for years:
"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle"

15. Historical destination to visit?
I'd love to visit Rome for the historical aspect

16. Biggest Wargaming regret?
I've never had fellow gamers close by so I regret not getting off my backside and travelling more to game.

17. Favourite Fantasy job?
Starting up my own gaming company and overseeing the creation of my own line of gaming miniatures – without the pressure of having to make a serious profit. So, if I win the lottery this week stay tuned.

18. Favourite Song, Top 5?
Far From Home by Five Finger Death Punch
Face to Face by Sevendust
Duality by Slipknot
Made of Scars by Stone Sour
Been A While by Staind

19. Favourite Wargaming Moment?
Without doubt the Melta Gun Guy moment that I talked about on my blog a while back – single survivor of an exploding Land Raider takes down an Eldar Falcon, then assaults a 10-man Guardian unit and wipes them out, then charges the Eldar Farseer and kills him (before being gunned down in the following turn).

20. The miserable Git question, what upsets you?
A lot, but I'll stick to the main few:
Bankers and the banking system in this country – the criminal acts they've committed over the past few years and the bonuses they STILL receive; Drivers who don't indicate; People who think the world owes them something just for being alive; People living off the state due to sheer laziness – especially the immigrants in Folkestone who have no intention of contributing to society, they just loiter outside our office and intimidate passers by; People who have no manners; People who have no concept of personal space. People's general lack of patience or ability to wait. In fact, people basically!

Attending to the Attendant…

The Mechanical Attendant

In order to get my second miniature started this weekend for A Tale of 3 Painters I had to fix the broken arms of the Mechanical Attendant this week. True to form I didn't get much chance to look at it until last night (Thursday), giving me this evening to tidy and undercoat ready for weekend painting.

The damaged Mech Attendant

You may remember, when I opened the Attendant's clamshell his robotic arms were very twisted and whilst attempting to fix the problem they both snapped off (above). The real issue now was that the metal in these places was too thin for a pin. I had two options in mind – glue them back in place with support of some kind, or cut them off entirely. I went with the former.

Fortunately, I discovered that if I faced them inwards, rather than the original outwards direction, they could rest on the top of the Attendant's shoulders and were supported on two sides. This would mean that they were only weak at the original join on the arm. This worked like a dream for the right hand side. On the left, however, the arm was distorted.

I decided to support this side by adding a length on pinning rod. I then filled in the gap behind it with greenstuff. It's more of an aesthetic solution as it doesn't support the join much more, it just hides the distorted arm a little better.

Looking at it again in the cold light of morning I think this is the best achievable solution, without rebuilding the entire arms from plasticardand bitz. It does the job and I'm looking forward to getting some undercoat spray on him this evening.

A Tale of 3 Painters… Week 2 Summary

As we reach the halfway stage in our month-long project things are looking very good.

The Hunter

Michael has stepped well and truly out of his comfort zone and done a fantastic job on The Hunter. He has used different metallics on alternate armour plates to create a striped effect along the machine's back. The idea of The Hunter being a stalker from the shadows has been nailed completely by the paint job. Yet, by introducing red shoulder plates and adding autumn leaves to the base Michael has managed to inject some real colour into the model and link it with the rest of the crew. I think he has done an amazing job and hopefully proved to himself that he can tackle any miniature, regardless of genre. I look forward to seeing the completed Ryle.

The Watcher

Ever the perfectionist, Andy has made great progress, adding his trademark Charadon Granite recipe to Hoffman's trousers – superb! He's also added a lot of colour to The Watcher, with a great contrast between the metallic elements and the leathery wings. He may have been given two of the smallest models in the crew but this was not an easy challenge. I'm very excited to see these two models finished.

The Guardian

I got back up to speed this week with The Guardian, the bulk of him complete now. I'm rather pleased with how he's turning out after a slow start. The rest of this week will be taken up fixing the damaged parts of the Mechanical Attendant so he can see some paint at the weekend.

In addition to the painting, KR Multicase joined our growing list of supporters and have been very generous in their contribution to the final auction pot. A big, big thank you to them.

As you can see, we're starting to see real progress now and are in a position to visualise how the different members of the crew are going to look together. Very exciting times – I'm quite jealous of the auction winner already… whomever that may be!

A Tale of 3 Painters… The Guardian

As we went into the second of the four weekends available to paint, I wanted to build on the previous week's work and get The Guardian close to finished. This would leave me a similar amount of time for the Mechanical Attendant.

I've been videoing my painting sessions so far with the intention of doing a behind-the-scenes montage video after the event. Unfortunately when the camera is all set up I find I'm concentrating more on the angle of the model and my hand positioning than the actual painting itself. This has meant that the results from the videoed sessions hasn't been great and I've done my better work when the camera was absent.

Saturday was no exception. I got myself in such a state I thought I'd wrecked the painting and would have to start from scratch. However, my wife suggested that I put the camera away, and she went out for the afternoon to leave me in peace. It worked and I managed to pull the model around into something that I'm very pleased with.

I added very, very thin Blood Red across the left side of the shield, giving the upper left part more coverage than the lower. I followed a similar procedure across the larger areas of the body armour. This was washed with Baal Red and Devlan Mud, with extra washes going across the right side of the shield. I highlighted the edges of the armour with Blood Red then Blazing Orange, picking out the dents in the armour in particular. I did a handful of Yellow highlights in key places, then the whole thing was washed in Baal Red again. This may seem excessive but it has created a very rich red colour, with real depth and is the pinnacle of everything I learned painting all that Blood Angel armour a couple of years ago.

Eyes, chest and back electrical elements were painted in a blue and white mix and the base was painted with progressively highlighted Vallejo Basalt Grey, washed with a Black and Brown mix.

I'm pretty happy with where this is at right now. I have a few bits to finish – the sword needs looking at and I'd like to add some additional shadows amongst other things – but this is the last work-in-progress post about him.

Next time you'll see The Guardian is when the whole crew are reunited!

Wyrd GenCon Previews

I thought today I'd take a break from the Tale of 3 Painters updates and have a look at some of the previews that Wyrd have been releasing prior to GenCon 2012 and the Book 4 launch.

As you may or may not know Book 4 – Storm of Shadows – introduces us to a new faction, the Ten Thunders, as well as swelling the ranks of the established factions. There is undoubtedly a far eastern theme running through a lot of what we've seen so far and this is most welcome.

Some of the things that have caught my eye in particular are the new Ten Thunders models. Misaki has now been upgraded from an Outcast minion to a Ten Thunders master and her crew set looks fantastic. The supporting box sets also look superb and with the introduction of plastic rather than metal models, this is set to be a benchmark year for Wyrd.

I love the way that the Ten Thunders characters revealed so far have taken the Far East theme and then put a definite Malifaux twist on them creating sexy, nightmarish models that tug at the inner gamer and scream out to be bought, regardless of which factions you currently collect.

Even the more traditional looking models, such as the archers above, look excellent and have very dynamic poses. It's almost as if someone read all my criticisms of model posing in the past and decided to counter them.

Within the last 24hrs Nathan has released images of some of the pages from the actual book, showing rules and stats for some of these new models. I'm very pleased to see that the standard of illustrations this year looks to have topped Book 3 and would appear at this stage to be a more polished release all round.

However, at the end of the day I am a Guild player and my eye is always drawn to things that my authoritarian faction masters can use. The addition of the Riflemen above is very exciting – the look fits in well with what has gone before and the rules and stats are very appealing too.

The preview of limited edition models is always exciting and when I saw Miss Terious (alternative female Death Marshall) and Santana Ortega (an alternative model for Santiago Ortega) I got very excited. Unfortunately the very nature of limited edition models is that they're not always easy to get hold of.

Santana is only available to Wyrd Henchmen, which I am not, though I expect to see an appearance on Ebay soon. Miss T is free when you spend $100 or more over GenCon weekend so I could blow some money or again wait for her to appear on Ebay. They look a little too similar for my liking, however, they both follow the visual pattern set by Perdita, of sexy gun-toting outlaw, so I'm in!

Finally, for The Guild, we saw the sneak peak above. The image file is named 'Mr Bugs Bunny' so make of that what you will. Another mounted character is always welcome.

I have to say that I am really looking forward to the releases this year. Last time round the excitement grew to fever pitch but I was so disappointed by some of the model sculpts that I haven't purchased that much from Book 3, or indeed used any Avatars yet. This year everything just seems so much sexier. I'll hold my hand up and say that I'm a sucker for shinies at the best of times, but I've been impressed with 90+ % of what I've seen so far, regardless of which faction the models are from.

The prospect of spending $100 to get Miss Terious doesn't seem quite so much of a stretch as it did last year, I might actually be able to find $100 worth of stuff I actually want – though my wife would beat me within an inch of my life if I did. Regardless, I've feeling very positive above this year's releases and Book 4. It looks like a return to form for Wyrd (in my eyes) – just the antidote needed to combat my Malifaux slump.
