Malifaux: Speedpainting Seamus

So I gave myself a bit of a challenge – not on purpose mind you. I have an 'Intro To Malifaux' evening with my friend Chris, who is interested in having a go at miniature gaming, on Friday evening. I had bought the Seamus box set for him to use while learning the rules but needed to paint up a miniature or two in time. This meant I had to 'speedpaint Seamus'.

Let me quantify this and say… this is me. Speedpainting in my world is not taking three weeks to paint up a single figure. As much as I needed to finish the Resser master in time I didn't want him to look like crap next to the rest of my models. I didn't want Chris to think I'd just rollered some Dulux on it for effect.

I am proud to say the model you see here was painted in something between two and three hours. This was me at full speed, painting highlights while basecoat was still wet and using three palettes and no washes so that I didn't have to wait for paint to dry.

I didn't want to go too Leprechaun-like but by the same token wanted to give a nod to his assumed heritage.

I'm pretty pleased so far. There are details (eyes!!) and final highlights to add and I stuffed up the blade on his pistol, but not bad. I did wash some Devlan Mud over the whole model at the end of the evening to add a little depth. I used Vallejo paint almost exclusively, except for the wash and some P3 on the base.

Why can't I paint all my models this quickly?!!

Forging a Fiend

With visitors staying this weekend there was not a lot of hobby opportunity. However, some progress was made.

The biggest task I face leading up to my next game is to get the Forgefiend into some sort of Nurgle order, so I set to with greenstuff. I have a painful habit of squishing bits I've already sculpted as I work elsewhere on the model so decided to break things down into section. I started with the right legs and armour and this would allow everything to cure thoroughly before my next greenstuff session.

I'm still deciding how far to take the rot on this model – understated as it is now or all out decay?

The main bulk of my hobby time this weekend was actually spent on a model I'm not going to reveal just yet. Needless to say I'm very pleased with the results and looking forward to splashing some paint on it. More in a later post.

I did get my next Champion rotted up a bit. To be honest his armour was almost there anyway so I didn't change much. He is now ready for an undercoat spray and basecoat – weather permitting.

Elsewhere I made progress on the troops, Terminators and Plague Marines getting their basecoats and in some cases a highlight or two (apologies for the out of focus image – it was taken in haste this morning).

So, as things are shaping up I should get one unit of Plague Marines complete this week, plus the Terminators and some other bits. This will leave me a week or so to have a go at the Forgefiend.

Take a trip over to Bull's blog where he has been discussing some of his Dark Angel dilemmas prior to game day.

Of course I have my evening of Malifaux on Friday. Seamus was built and undercoated over the weekend and will see some paint this week!

A Quick Visit To Malifaux

With October truly being the month of Nurgle on this blog it was about time for something less diseased.

Prior to my game of 40k versus Bull at the end of November, I have a gaming evening with my friend Chris in a week's time. Whilst a complete newbie when it comes to the world of miniature gaming, Chris is a sci-fi & fantasy veteran with many books, tv/films and video games read, watched and completed. He is quite a font of knowledge and will often throw facts and observations into a given conversation. He is the ideal candidate for recruitment! At the time we discussed playing an introductory game I was heavily into Malifaux so it made sense (for that and many other reasons) to start there.

However, my Malifaux collection consists of lots of Guild models and Kirai, so I felt a new master was needed that would be easier to learn the game with. I decided to get Seamus and use him and Lady J for our intro games – the classic match up!

Rather than go the route that myself and Bull went when learning the rules (use all your models and fight a 4-hour game) we're going to have a handful of smaller games, adding models and rules as we go. This also means I don't have the paint up the whole Seamus crew just yet which, given the current painting schedule, is a blessing.

If I'm really honest, the time pumped into completing the Charity Project turned me off from painting Malifaux figures for a while and diseased Nurgle Plague Marines have been the perfect antidote (ironically) to my painting malady. I won't be spending anywhere near the same amount of time on Seamus so this will be a test – can I speed-paint Malifaux figures?

Photos coming soon…!
