A Tale of 3 Painters… Week 1 Summary

How time flies!
We're already a week into our month of charity painting and we're starting to see progress on all fronts.

Hoffman
Andy posted recently about his progress with the Watcher and showing off Hoffman at a very early stage. Having held the Hoffman model in my hand and knowing how slight it is I'm blown away with the detail Andy has achieved – the fact that the detail holds up to close photographic inspection highlights the quality of his painting.

Ryle
Michael was very quickly out of the blocks this week and the first to post about his progress. His bold painting style gives Ryle a graphic-novel quality that makes him look like he just stepped off the printed page. This is absolutely perfect for Ryle's character in-game and I am really looking forward to seeing his progress.

The Guardian
As for myself, I was keen to get a good start. Being the slow painter I am means there was the very real danger of it all being last minute at the end of the month. Despite being rather hamstrung by tonsillitis last weekend I managed to get to grips with the metallics, making good use of my Vallejo Matt Medium, and jumped in with some red armour coverage. The resulting "Medieval Iron Man" (thanks to Laughing Ferret for the name) is very much in keeping with Malifaux and, whilst not there yet, is definitely heading in the right direction.

Alongside the painting progress we have been very lucky and picked up support from Fenris Games (creators of excellent resin bases, miniatures and scenery), Firestorm Games (suppliers of almost everything wargame-related you could ever want) and the creators of Malifaux themselves Wyrd Miniatures who are all contributing to our final auction.

So, a lot has happened in the first week – pressure's on for week 2!!

As much as we are enjoying this project, it is for charity. If you enjoy reading about our progress please donate towards our final total – even if it's only £1 – via the donate button at the top of the page or on the Cancer Research UK website directly.

A Tale of 3 Painters… Getting Wyrd

I am happy to announce that I've had confirmation this week from Nathan at Wyrd Miniatures – creators of Malifaux – that they will be supporting our painting project with a contribution to the final auction. That is superb news and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nathan for his time, especially at the moment.

The guys are currently in the middle of preparing for their busiest time of the year – GenCon 2012 and the launch of Malifaux book 4 "Storm of Shadows", along with a whole new range of plastic miniatures.

I would also like to thank Bill at the Gamers Lounge who did a shout out for us in a special events episode of the podcast. The Gamers Lounge is a must-listen-to podcast for any would-be Malifaux gamer, especially if you enjoy the tournaments.

The Joey Berry did a shout of for us on her latest episode of Joeyfaux and mentioned our game on 3rd September. A big thank you to Joey for that.

More news soon…

A Tale of 3 Painters… Let There Be Paint

Just as my excitement to get this project started was hitting fever pitch last week… disaster… I managed to pick up tonsillitis!

My first thought was that this would give me extra time away from work to paint – err, no. I was absolutely floored for two days and even going into the new week I'm not 100%. However, never one to let something as insignificant as illness get in the way of miniature painting I did manage to get a few hours under my belt on Saturday.

Whilst not on top form I laid some of the ground work on The Guardian. I started with the metal parts, using Vallejo Oily Steel as the basecoat for the majority of the parts, with Vallejo Brass employed for the back panel and sword hilt.

I decided to try out something that has been sitting on my desk for ages and, OMG – what a revelation… Vallejo Matt Medium, when mixed with metallic paint, produces a superb finish. No longer does the metal look shiny, cheap and nasty. The matt finish gives it a more elegant feel. I can't quite believe I hadn't tried this sooner.

Backpack/armour colour combination reminds me of The Rocketeer!

Not content with getting the metal to a good point I wanted to get a couple of layers of my armour colour down before Monday. I have been undecided since the project began as to the colour to use for the Guardian's armour plates. In the end I decided to go with the Guild red I'd specified in the original brief.

After several test of different red colours on a piece of card I decided to stick with my tried and trusted Blood Angel armour recipe. It's a little brighter than I wanted but could be pulled around to suit. My main worry was that it was going to be too much, very 'in your face' but ploughed on anyway. I put down several layers, building up from pure black to a 90:10 red black mix. By this time my concentration was starting to go and I was making mistakes, so I washed what I had done in GW Baal Red and left it to dry.

Looking at the model as it stands the red is quite overpowering so I will give it a day or so to sink in before going back to it. The red is definitely too orange at the moment. I may change the colour of the shield to compensate or may just try and pull it back with the shading and battle damage – if any of our models can get away with looking truly battered it's this guy!
